Matt has been on a cheese tasting kick lately. He attended a whiskey and cheese tasting a couple months ago as part of a conference and then sampled some cheese and beer at a local market – and now I have several delicious artisan chesses in our fridge. Matt can pick out some nice cheeses! I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when he asked for cheese and crackers for dinner the other night. At least I set it up with some fruits and vegetables!
The first cheese he picked out was called campfire. It came from Brennan’s Market and it is a smoked monetary jack. It went great with the crackers. You could taste the smoky flavor, but it wasn’t overpowering.
The second cheese was a Balsamic BellaVitano made by Sartori. This was an aged cheese with a sharp bite and much stronger flavor than the campfire cheese. This one was crumbly and was best sampled on it’s own. Matt said this is his favorite cheese!
Matt had asked for zucchini to go with dinner. We didn’t realize it until we were having dinner – but the zucchini made a nice pallet cleanser between the two cheeses.
FYI – if you are interested, the wine is also one of our favorites. It’s the Prairie Fume from Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, WI. It has been named “Blockbuster Wine of the Year” and has “the most medals of any wine east of the Rockies” and I can see why. It’s a great white table wine, not too sweet but not super dry!
