One of the things I was most excited about when Matt and I decided we were ready to buy a house was to have a garden in our back yard. We haven’t done this before and neither of us grew up in houses with gardens – so we’ll see how this goes! We thought we might share a few picture updates as we go this summer!
We went with a raised garden. We’ve heard from multiple neighbors the soil in our neighborhood isn’t great and when I was reviewing methods online I consistently read good things about raised gardens. Matt found a trick online that if you place a layer of cardboard under the soil it will prevent some of the weeds from coming in. We’ll see if it works!
We needed about 25 bags of soil. That was a workout for us to get it into the garden.
On day 1 of planting we added several herbs: basil, thyme, rosemary, and chives. We also added a cucumber plant, lettuce, peppers, and tomatoes.
This only filled about half of the garden, so on day 2 we added : sage, more lettuce, cabbage, carrots and peas from seeds, and a few strawberry plants.
Wish us luck!
